Why Poodles are Clipped Like That?

April 10th, 2010 Articles

Why poodles are clipped like that?

The clipping and grooming of poodles has come a long way from its early utilitarian days as a means to improve a poodle’s ability to swim through water, help it avoid snagging on undergrowth, and keep its joints warm and protected from the cold.

In recent years it has been raised to a near art form. There are four primary show-quality clips for poodles: Read the rest of this entry »

Poodle Breed Guide

April 9th, 2010 Articles

Getting along with the kids, the cat and the guinea pig is no problem for the poodle. Lively and affectionate, they make wonderful companion dogs. They can be good guard dogs, announcing visitors but never being aggressive. Poodles are unusually sensitive to vocal intonation, probably one of the reasons they are so easy to train. They are high-spirited, happy dogs who love a busy life and being involved in all family matters. Read the rest of this entry »

Poodle History

April 6th, 2010 Articles

There can be little doubt that the breed originated in Germany, where it is known as the “Pudel”, and classed as the “Canis familiaris Aquaticus”.

In form and coat he would seem to be closely related to the old Water-dog, and the resemblance between a brown Poodle and an Irish Water Spaniel is remarkable. The Poodle is no longer regarded as a sporting dog, but at one period he was trained to retrieve waterfowl, and he still on occasion displays an eager fondness for the water. Please Don't Allow Michael Vick Back Into the NFL Until Tested

February 8th, 2009 Articles

Dogs need your voice right away. Please take a few moments now to send a message directly to the NFL. Michael Vick is going to be released from prison any minute, and in light of recently released government evidence that he enjoyed putting his own family “pet dogs” into the ring with fighting pit bulls, PETA is urging the NFL to make Vick take a test for anti-social personality disorder (ASPD), or psychopathy. Vick seems to fit the profile for ASPD, which includes lying, manipulating others, enjoying others’ suffering, and being aggressive and charming. If Vick has ASPD, the NFL needs to know. That’s because people who have ASPD cannot be truly remorseful and are likely to repeat the anti-social behavior that pleases them. If he isn’t a psychopath, that’s fair enough, but if he is, he shouldn’t ever be presented to children as a hero. He needs to take the test!

Puppy Training

July 8th, 2007 Articles

Puppies and dogs training are two different realities, much like a child and man training. As a kid is not a miniature man, puppies are not bonsai dogs. In younger ages psyque is completely different, and react to stimulation in a very different way than adults. A kid or puppy’s mind is like a sponge absorbing millions of information that adults will find difficult to digest, or that they will simply ignore. Therefore, if you want a trained and obedient dog, you better start training him young. Some years ago it was usual to wait until the puppy was one year old to start his training, because it was considered that before that age they were too young. The only thing they were taught not to do, was to poop in the house.

This would be like starting school at twenty years of age, adducing lack of maturity for learning. Kids would probably love this idea, but we all know it’s not the right way. The most adequate age for learning is youth, though it’s necessary to adapt lessons to the possibilities of a developing mind. When young, the dog also discovers the hierarchic order within the pack, the puppy learns there is a boss, and status differences. If the animal does not accept rules from his first months of age, and does not learn to respect superiors, then he becomes an unsettled being, unable to live in groups. When puppies enter home for the first time, they instinctively tend to evaluate the “hierarchic ranks” of the family members, to identify the leader, to know who can he trust, who to follow, and with whom can he only play, without expecting something in reward.

The puppy needs the leader’s figure to give him confidence and security. That figure is a human being that replaces the mother first, and the pack leader afterwards. It’s like a ten years old kid having to do the job of city major, assuming all the responsibilities of that position. Obviously he won’t be a happy person, but all the opposite, the poor kid will become deeply confused, will not sleep at nights, overwhelmed by his job. This explains why a puppy must be directed and educated. It also explains why he must be trained in the basic house rules, like potty training. What he can and can’t do while in the house.
